Following your bliss is not self-indulgent, but vital; your whole physical system knows that this is the way to be alive in this world and the way to give to the world the very best that you have to offer. There IS a track just waiting for each of us and once on it, doors will open that were not open before and would not open for anyone else. - Joseph Campell

Martin Sexton

Oh my goodness, the first concert of the year has set a seriously high bar.  I must confess that I am not too familiar with Martin's work.  I love Can't Stop Thinking About You, which I grabbed after hearing it on an episode of Brotherhood.  I had read though that he is known for his live performances.  Last week I saw that he was going to be here, and I asked my friend Juli if she was interested.  She said yes, and away we went.  Oh boy, we both are so glad we did.  I've thrown around the word "amazing" a lot when describing the concerts I've gone to, but somehow amazing  falls kind of short here.  I did get two of his albums to prepare for the show this week, and though they are really good.  I feel like they will be rather flat when I listen to them again.  Nothing will be able to replicate what we experienced last night.

I need to add that Martin's show was just Martin and a guitar, just one guitar.  He didn't even change out.  What he was able to do with his voice and that guitar, you didn't need a whole band behind him.  They would have just gotten in the way.  I love all types of music, and what I also appreciated about the show was the wide range of genres and styles he pulled in.  He also said that he didn't have a set list, and was just winging it.  Impressive, truly impressive.  We both agreed that we would definitely see him again.  No doubt about it.

Need to sneak in here that we went to a new venue, The Neptune.  It is an old movie theatre that they converted into a concert hall.  It was really cool.  It had festival seating with actual seats (no standing), clean bathroom, and a parking lot close by.  Definitely going back there.

Here's a taste of what I am talking about.  Not bad for a guy in the crowd.

  2. ok, I had to add something to my original post, so starting over:

Thank You Christine...for the writing about the concert, posting the YouTube clip to share, and most important: For inviting me to the best show of my life!!

Martin is a performer that Must be experienced Live...to completely absorb him beyond what the ears hear. He will rock all your sensibilities to the core. I have Never seen a live performance that compares to what Martin delivers. Oh yeah, this guy sets the bar Way high!! He opened for John Mayer....and I honestly can't imagine the courage it would take for Any artist to follow Martin's act.

The NYT published a quote that sums it all up:

"his unpretentious heartiness helps him focus on every soul singer’s goal: to amplify the sound of the ordinary heart." oh yeah...Beyond Extraordinary!
