Following your bliss is not self-indulgent, but vital; your whole physical system knows that this is the way to be alive in this world and the way to give to the world the very best that you have to offer. There IS a track just waiting for each of us and once on it, doors will open that were not open before and would not open for anyone else. - Joseph Campell

the black donnellys

Last week I watched the first and only season of The Black Donnellys.  I had watched the first couple of episodes back in the day, but I didn't keep with it.  I really like Paul Haggis and Jonathan Tucker.  They were the draws.  Turns out Amazon has the full 13 episodes for $11, so I bought it.  Blew through them in a couple of days.

I had recently watched a couple of other shows that only lasted a season or less, Flash Forward and Kidnapped.  I have to say that I loved and liked, respectively, those shows a lot more.  There was a lot to like about The Black Donnellys though, one of which was it was a refreshing show.  I like shows that aren't formulaic, and are a novelization.

Anyway, the reason why I am even posting about it is that early I had mentioned how much I HATED Gwyneth Paltrow's character on Glee.  Well, I found her male counterpart, Jimmy Donnelly. Oh my goodness!!  What a horrible character.  The sad thing about him is that he had a lot of shit happen to him in his life, but he was such an asshole about it you couldn't feel sorry for him.  He was so reckless.  He was hurting, and by God he was going to make as many people as he could hurt along with him.  Not that he was conscious of that of course.  The difference between Jimmy and Miss Holiday (or whatever her name was) is that Jimmy and his issues were felt in every scene and every corner of the show.  There was some really good, thoughtful writing going on.  It was just so hard to watch.  Where as Miss Whatever her name was, was just annoying.

I really do love that I can go back and watch shows I missed the first time.

PS:  Olivia Wilde is in this show.  You know she's naturally blonde?  I saw some old photos of her, and she looks so much better as a brunette, so striking.  She actually looked washed out and totally nondescript as a blonde.  What an amazing transformation.  Olivia was really good in the show, and I appreciated how real she was.  Her hair was messy, and she didn't wear much makeup.  She looked like the hardworking waitress she was playing.
