A couple of things occurred to me last night whilst lying in bed not being able to fall asleep. Mostly it revolved around me putting my big girl pants on, and trying to build myself an audience. A lot crossed my mind, unfortunately, since I am in desperate need of sleep right now, and the thing I kept coming back to was that I need to reach out to people. I have been a silent observer of other people's sites, and I need to stop that. If I want people to connect with me, then I need to connect with people.
One way I thought of doing this is to start spotlighting blogs, Tumblrs, tweeters and Pinterest boards that I start following myself. Something that has always fascinated me is the course of thought and learning in a organic unstructured way. Simply, how one thing leads to another. Spotlighting people will allow me to document how I actually became aware of them. I will also encourage people who then check out these new folks, to let me know if they see anything that struck their fancy. Like tweeting me a picture, for example.
The scary part is that I decided I need to contact the people I spotlight. This is the reaching out part. Cold calling people is totally scary to me, but for now I think it is a good place to start. This is an experiment, and we will see if anything comes of it. To a certain extent I am quite content with my little audience of one. My hope is that as I grow as a writer, I will have an audience that grows too.
