Okay, I just had to get this rant out because I am so pissed. I am a serious music junkie, and have acquired about 17,000 songs over my life. One of my favourite ways to waste time is organizing my iTunes catalog. I've spent more hours than I'd like to admit making things just the way I want them. Then comes along the latest iTunes update. Oh hell's bells. This is the biggest load of crap I've seen in I can't even remember. They've totally wrecked it. They've changed everything, and now all the functionality I used, oh like everyday, is gone!! I can't organize and sort the way I want to. Grrr!!
Oh yes, and I am all about my play counts. Turns out iTunes doesn't like the way I've edited and renamed my stuff, and has decided, though no one asked it to, to erase and reload everything it doesn't apparently like. Thereby erasing all my play counts. You son of a bitch. I am so pissed, and it keeps doing it everyday, and has done this to hundreds of my songs.
Breathe . . .
What am I going to going to do? I can't live with this. Yes, I could reload the old version, but honestly I am so mad I am ready to walk away from iTunes altogether. With that said, I got my new HTC phone a couple months ago, and one of the things it was touting was Google Play. I took a closer look, and isn't actually that bad. Now, a month ago I would never had considered it because it doesn't have the functionality of iTunes, er the old iTunes. However, now that that world is gone, it functions pretty much the way iTunes 11.0 does. With a few added perks.
1) I don't know if it is just in my head, but I swear the sound is better. There's more depth to my songs. It may be purely psychological, but I'm going with Google Play sounds better than iTunes. Yep, I said it. The only downside is occasionally there are small breakups in the play. Noticeable yes, but not nearly as annoying as iTunes locking up, and having to do a force close, then waiting five minutes for it to reload my library, eventually letting me get back to my music. ::sigh::
2) 20,000 songs can be uploaded to the cloud for FREE. iTunes is really pushing this iCloud business, but isn't uploading to Google for free just the same? Seriously, if Google crashes we are all fucked. I'm sorry. So yeah, uploading my 17,000 songs to Google sounds like a good idea to me. I'd absolutely welcome anyone's opinion why it isn't, because maybe I am missing something. At any rate, I've been slowly loading my songs to Google over the last week, and have about 3,500 left.
3) Accessibility is also very sweet. Being able to have ALL 17,000 songs available anywhere it pretty damn cool. I can even play them on my iPad. Did I mention the FREE part? I am perilously close to the 20,000 cap. I'm not sure what will happen if/when I exceed that. How much it will cost me at that point. I'm thinking I need to pace my purchasing. Probably not a bad idea all the way around. =)
What I don't really like about Google Play is basically what I don't like about the iTunes 11.0. I can't see and sort things the way I want to. I have to click too much to see what I want to, and moving around my songs is kind of slow. Probably because I have too many.
I am in mourning the loss of the old iTunes. I miss it so much, but I doubt Apple will bring it back. Therefore I am moving on. Gotta do what you gotta do.
