I just watched Elizabeth Gilbert's TED Talk ~ Your Elusive Creative Genius, and am both inspired and impressed.
First, I think "showing up", as she says, is the hardest part. Getting yourself in the chair to write (or whatever your art is), and staying focused on your writing is more than half the battle. Especially in this world of tiny distractions. It is a given that we have to battle back our daily responsibilities, work, family, and general self maintenance (Is my ordering of that telling?) to find time for our art. But now we not only have the old standbys of books and TV, but email, Twitter, blogs, my personal nemesis Pinterest and the like. There are even more things to distract us! Getting ourselves in the chair and staying there, focused on our task, is no small feat. That's where discipline and accountability are essential. I am working so hard on both!! I know I'm not saying anything new, but I think it is something every artist has to conquer. Everyone's art and their process is unique, but every artist has to battle something to make it happen whether it is family expectations, time, money or our own inner demons. Yes, Elizabeth was completely inspirational. Take the "my art needs to be brilliant" out of the equation, and just focus on showing up.
Secondly, I posted a little bit ago that I watched Susan Cain's ~ The Power of Introverts TED Talk. She did a really good job, especially given her topic was introverts, and that she is one herself. You go Susan!! However, I was really impressed with Elizabeth's talk. She was so natural, and it wasn't until the end, when she did her summation, that I realized what she said was planned. LOL It just seemed so off the cuff, you know? I was completely taken in by what she was saying.
Yup, I'm inspired and impressed. :o)
