Following your bliss is not self-indulgent, but vital; your whole physical system knows that this is the way to be alive in this world and the way to give to the world the very best that you have to offer. There IS a track just waiting for each of us and once on it, doors will open that were not open before and would not open for anyone else. - Joseph Campell

2012 Concert Recap Part Two

Things slowed down in the latter part of the year mostly because of my finances, but I did see some of my all time favourite artists.  YAY!!

May

Matt Wertz

To start off, Matty's (that's what I like to call him) Twentythree Places is one of my all time favourite albums. Love it!!  Truth is though, Matty is more than just a singer-songwriter, he is just plain entertaining, down right hilarious in fact.  His show was half singing-half stand up.  A fantastic evening at The Triple Door. The chocolate martini's were flowing with the sing-a-longs and a lot of laughing.  An all around fun time.

Jon McLaughlin

Aaahh!! Jon Jon Jon.  I will straight up confess that I didn't take my eyes off of him the whole night.  Well, maybe once or twice.  He is painfully good looking, which is probably not a good thing for him considering he's so talented.  I did allow my eyes to drift down to his hands.  He really is an extremely talented piano player.  All I can say is I could have sat there forever.  The Triple Door was the perfect place to see him.  He had played there before, but sadly I heard about it after the fact.  That's when I realized that I  have to check their site every week to see who's coming.  There was no way I was going to let him get by me again.

July

Michael Kaeshammer

Yes, Jon is gorgeous, extremely talented and very funny (forgot to mention that above - my bad).  Well, Michael Kaeshammer would be the Canadian version of that, with a little Michael Buble thrown in.  I was not familiar with Michael before July.  Again, I was looking for a show to go to, and I had seen his name on The Triple Door site a few times before.  They said he was one of their favourites, so I checked out his site, which I highly recommend.  His hands get so high off the keyboard, it is truly amazing that his fingers manage to find their way to the right keys.  Like Martin Sexton and Mutemath, Michael is someone you need to be n the same room with to fully appreciate what they have to give.  I'll definitely see him again.

Did I mention how cute he is?  Totally crush worthy.

August

Jack White

Check another one off the list.  I got to see Jack White baby!!  In a word, intense.  The sheer volume that is Jack White filled the WaMu Theater with nonstop intensity, every nerve ending was lit up. It was the type of show where you walk out sweaty and exhausted.  My only real complaint was that the crowd would not stop moving.  I go to a lot of stand and listen shows, and you usually find your spot and you're good. This show was not like that. The crowd kept shifting, so you were forced to shift with them, like the tide.  I hadn't ever experienced anything like that. It was worth it though.  I got to see Jack!!!  Hee Hee!!

September

Garbage

It was a bit tricky getting to see Garbage, cause I was out of town the day they came. I had driven from Eastern Washington back home in the morning, and I was a bit tired.  I wasn't going to let that stop me though.  Not much music from the 90's has stuck with me, but Garbage totally stands up.  They sound just as good today.  I completely freaked out when they did Hammering in my Head, which is one of my faves.  So, so happy I was able to see them.  :o)

Had to add this one too, love the skulls!!  Totally makes me think of Frida Kahlo.

October

Ken Burns

Okay, not technically a concert, but saw him speak at The Neptune, so I'm counting it.  I've watched quite a few of Ken's documentaries over the years, but it wasn't until I saw him interviewed on Charlie Rose that I became an uber-fan.  He has a way of speaking that keeps you hanging on his every word.  It is seems wrong to me that he doesn't actually write or narrate his documentaries because he is one of the best speakers I've ever heard.  I seriously could listen to him talk for hours.  So, when I happened to see that The Neptune was having An Evening with Ken Burns I understandably freaked out.  He was there to promote his latest documentary The Dust Bowl.  He did an introduction, showed an hour's worth of edited bits of the doc, and did a Q&A after.  It was funny because the guy who was interviewing him would ask his little prepared question, and then Ken would talk for 5 minutes on something vaguely related to the question.  It didn't matter what the question was, he could have sat there and talked for a couple of hours about anything an everything, and I would have been transfixed.  My friend Juli went with me, and I was quite relieved that she felt the same way.  Love him!!

December

Meshell Ndegeocello

Talk about last minute.  I got an email that Meshell was going to be playing at a little theater in my neighborhood of all places, and it was going to be the next day!! If that wasn't enough, she was doing a tribute to Nina Simone.  Oh hell's bells!!  There was no way I couldn't go.  Totally last minute I was able to get my December show in, and was an amazing show.  What Meshell has done is so beautiful.  Not only has she compiled some of the best songs ever, but then put her stamp on them.  I am telling you.  It was all about the arrangements.  What she did with those songs was stunning. Loved it!!   I went straight home and bought the album Pour une āme souveraine - A dedication to Nina Simone.  On top of that she had little stories and anecdotes between each song.   It was a unique, inspiring, intimate, meditative and truly memorable evening.  I am so happy I got that email!!

So that's it!!  14+1 shows for 2012.  2013 is getting off to a slow start, as I haven't been able to find anything to go to in January, BUT in February I am seeing the reunited Ben Folds Five.  Whoo Hoo!!
